I have been painting urban themes since art school in the early nineties. I attended college in New England and was inspired to paint public transit paintings while visiting New York City. I moved to San Francisco in 1995 and lived in and painted that city until 2006. In 2008, I moved to NYC and began painting its sublime beauty beginning January 2009. I take the composition of my paintings and gestures of my figures from drawings I do on site and make the paintings at my apartment.
I chose to keep the subway series paintings one size to reflect the uniform and repetitive space of the subway car. I respond to the multi-cultural situations forced by this intimate space. The stories and compositions are endless on the subway. New York’s awesome beauty is unmatched by any other city due to its architecture. When I paint the city skylines, I think to myself that the buildings are like figures. I try to personify them and still paint the reality that I see. Like my subway paintings I think of color, light, composition and subject.
